Enigma - Age of Loneliness (Sliver Soundtrack)
is a 1994 single by the musical group, Enigma. The single was the second one to be released from The Cross of Changes.
The song can be regarded as a remixed version of an earlier Enigma song, "Carly's Song", where the song was originally more laid back and goes at a slower pace. The vocals in the song are whispered by Sandra Cretu and the lyrics actually refers to the main character from Sliver, Carly Norris (played by Sharon Stone).
Jens used a panned tic toc effect and an array of cinematic sound effects for the enigmatic club mix. some sound ideas came from remixes of the band 'snap' who were at the height of their success and whose producer Michael Muenzing was a frequent ibiza traveller and friend of michael and jens.
The haunting chant in this song is of Mongolian origin overall the song without any permission and has a tinge of Gregorian chantingin it. It is from the Mongolian traditional long song, "Under The Sun Of Placid World ", sung by Namjilyn Norovbanzad. For the "Enigmatic Club Mix", the beat of the song was pushed up a notch and laced generously with beeps of morse code throughout the song. The morse code spells out "I love you". For the "Jam & Spoon Remix", the song starts off with a short and relaxing piano piece. Although included in the "Age of Loneliness" single, it is exactly the same one found in the "Carly's Song" single.
In the music video for the song, the scene is set in New York City and entirely filmed in sepia. People are seen floating through the air weightlessly but remain unseen by the surrounding people.
Jens delivered 2 Remixes for this big soundtrack song of Enigma. Again using an array of spacey effects, this first remix almost becomes a soundtrack of it's own. There are new staccato brass breakdowns, a ping pong panned bell pattern (we borrowed this from a remix the group snap released back then). very experimental. we made big use of the back then brand new EMU 4 sampler which could play 128 voices at a time which was a sensation back then.
