Enigma - Return to Innocence
"Return to Innocence" released 1994 worldwide by Virgin Records.
The single was the first from Enigma's chart-topping second album, The Cross of Changes.
It became one of the project's most popular international singles, reaching number one in over 10 countries (including Greece, Norway, Sweden and Ireland), number two on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart, number four on the US Hot 100, number three on the UK Singles Chart, the Top 5 in Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Netherlands, Switzerland and South Africa. It reached the Top 10 in Italy and France.
Jens was in the studio with Michael when this song's radio version was mixed. So it was a natural move to produce the highly acclaimed Remix Versions for this song which became one of Jens' biggest Remix releases ever.
Michael gave Jens complete freedom for the remixing, it could be experimental and crazy, Enigma was at the top of it's career, so everything was possible.
Jens found the 'vocal sidechain gating effect' (similar as in Kesha's 'Blow' or Britney's 'Till the World ends') to treat the vocal samples of this song. it would sound new and edited but you could still recognize the hook. Jens also used heavily distorted guitar / feedback samples he created. When it was done, he thought, this mix was too crazy to be released, but Michael loved it the way it was (just like the crazy guitar solos of 'i love you I'll kill you) and so it became part of Enigma's long history.
