when you see her perform live, images of joan jett or pat benatar appear in your mind.
she's a sexy 'badass' rock'n'roll singer, writing big pop songs and singing them with a even bigger voice.
BIOGRAPHY - CHRISTY THOMPSON
Since making New York City her home almost four years ago, Christy Thompson, now 22, has quickly become the artist to watch in the downtown music scene.
With shows at Webster Hall Studio, Highline Ballroom, Piano's, Canal Room and countless others, she's built a loyal following of fans impressed with her stage presence
and emotional performances.
From training with vocal coach Don Lawrence (Mick Jagger, Lady Gaga) to jamming out with guitarist Tommy Kessler (Blondie), now her band member;
Christy’s been featured on HBO (singing the National Anthem), The Songwriters Hall of Fame (New Writers CD), and is a writer with BMI.
Her current buzzed about single “NOW OR NEVER”, a rock-synth power track, was penned by Christy and produced by Brooklyn-based duo Jamie Biden and Sanford Livingston.
But to focus solely on Christy’s meteoric rise is to miss the point. Her voice as an artist has steadily developed pretty much from birth.
Christy grew up in the small beach town of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Her father built fighter jets at the Air Force base, while her mother was a choir teacher at the local parish. “
As a kid, I remembered listening to Elvis, Little Richard and Whitney Houston and I would continuously mimic their voices, memorize all of the lyrics and try to embody their performances”.
Testing the waters, Christy began singing at local talent shows, school plays, football games, anywhere she could get on stage and perform. In her early teens,
Christy’s curious nature and love for the unpaved road, led her on one adventure after the next.
She and her friends would pile into her car and road trip to New Orleans or Atlanta just to catch performances by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt & A Perfect Circle, to name a few.
With the need for expression, Christy picked up the guitar and found that in writing her own songs and using personal experiences, she had discovered her true passion.
“I love a girl who can kick ass and tell you what she really feels”. She writes about overcoming struggle, female empowerment, ex boyfriends, and adventurous nights.
Writing was her only way of communicating back to the world her story and true feelings of what’s going on around her.
And while inspired by such greats as Kate Bush, Heart, The Beatles, Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, Blondie, Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, and Pink Floyd,
Christy knew it was time to find her own voice as an artist.
At the ripe old age of 18, she did what any other rebel would...Christy burst out of Florida with three suitcases and a handful of cash.
She made the move to New York City and settled in the East Village. With no family or connections, she knew it was time to focus on her one and only goal - to make it as an artist.
Within a year she played her first show at The Bitter End, performing all original material and by 2010 had released her first self titled EP.
Christy’s sound is a mélange of her influences, her past, and of New York, which she now calls home.
“This city gave me what I needed to find myself and become an artist”. Her powerful voice, big catchy choruses, and relatable stories make for an astonishing electronic pop-rock sound.
Christy says, “I want to leave my audience feeling empowered”. Anyone listening to her music can’t help but feel just that.
